The RAD 414 class, Advanced Clinical Practice Skills, has many impacting parts, but the pivotal moment, for me, was the cultural communication paper. For this paper, we were instructed to pick a culture different from our own. With some research, we were to discuss the verbal and nonverbal communication, religious views, and tabos that could be miscommunicated in a health care setting. Before the project, I did not realized how important knowing about different cultures was. I did not understand that a simple seemingly comforting touch on the shoulder could be perceived as a horrific event. The project showed me that as a health care provider I need to be aware and informed on communication customs of other cultures so that effective communication can be achieved.
